QUICK ANSWER

How much do car salesmen make? Retail salespersons employed by automobile dealers earned a median $44,680 a year in May 2025, according to BLS. The middle half earned $34,910 to $63,550, and the top 10% earned more than $87,570. Most pay is commission: a share of each deal's gross profit, plus volume bonuses and spiffs.

Picture a salesperson on a dealership lot outside Tampa on the last Saturday of the month. He has delivered nine cars, and the tenth moves him to a higher bonus tier. At 6:40 p.m. a couple walks in asking about a used SUV. He already knows the deal they want leaves almost no profit in it.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • BLS: dealership retail salespersons earned a median $44,680 in May 2025, with the top 10% above $87,570.
  • The BLS figure includes commissions and production bonuses but not the self-employed.
  • Most pay plans combine front-end gross commission, minis, volume bonuses, spiffs and draws.
  • Federal rules exempt certain dealership sales staff from overtime, and draws are settled against commission.
  • Get your written pay plan, including any pack, before your first day on the lot.

That choice, take the thin deal or hold out for a fat one, is the daily math of car sales. Your paycheck isn't set by the hour. It's set by how many cars you deliver, how much profit is in each one and which bonuses you hit.

Below is what car salespeople actually earn according to federal wage data, exactly what that number measures, and how dealership pay plans turn each sale into commission.

How much do car salesmen make, according to BLS?

The best public number comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey. BLS doesn't publish a separate "car salesperson" occupation. It reports retail salespersons by industry, and the automobile dealers industry (NAICS 441100) is where dealership salespeople are counted.

Retail salespersons at automobile dealers, May 2025Annual wage
Bottom 10% earned less than$28,310
25th percentile$34,910
Median (half earned more, half less)$44,680
Mean (average)$54,330
75th percentile$63,550
Top 10% earned more than$87,570

BLS counted 225,610 retail salespersons working at automobile dealers in May 2025, with a mean hourly wage of $26.12. All figures come from the May 2025 OEWS estimates for automobile dealers.

For comparison, the median for all retail salespersons across every industry was $35,410, per the May 2025 national estimates. At the median, dealership salespeople earned about $9,270 more than the typical retail salesperson.

What that figure measures, exactly

  • Who's counted: wage and salary workers classified as retail salespersons and employed by automobile dealers. BLS doesn't separate new-car from used-car salespeople, or vehicle salespeople from other retail salespersons a dealer employs.
  • What's included: OEWS wages include commissions and production bonuses, according to the May 2025 technical notes. Overtime pay and nonproduction bonuses are excluded.
  • Who's left out: the survey doesn't include the self-employed, per the OEWS overview.
  • Experience is blended: rookies in their first month and 20-year veterans sit in the same distribution.

The gap between the median ($44,680) and the mean ($54,330) tells you something too. A smaller group of high earners pulls the average up. That's the shape of a commission job.

What do other dealership sales jobs pay?

The sales floor is one rung. Here's what the same May 2025 BLS data for automobile dealers shows for related roles.

Role at automobile dealers (May 2025)Median annual wageMean annual wage
Retail salespersons$44,680$54,330
Parts salespersons$45,930$49,920
First-line supervisors of retail sales workers$74,760$84,510
Sales managers$138,970$165,370

Management is where dealership pay jumps. If that's your target, our guide to the automobile sales manager role covers what the job involves and how people get there.

How do car salesmen get paid?

Most car salesman pay plans are built from the same parts. The exact percentages and dollar amounts vary by dealer, brand and state, so read your written pay plan line by line before you start.

Commission on front-end gross

Front-end gross is the dealer's profit on the vehicle itself, roughly the selling price minus what the dealer has invested in that car. Salespeople typically earn a percentage of it. Jalopnik writer Lawrence Hodge, drawing on his time selling cars, described some dealers paying 20 percent of gross on new cars and 50 percent on used ones.

The pack

Some dealers subtract a fixed amount, often called a pack, from the gross before your commission is calculated. It covers dealer costs. A pack can turn a small-profit deal into a zero-commission deal, so ask whether your plan has one and how big it is.

Flats and minis

When a deal has little or no gross, many plans pay a flat minimum per car, often called a mini. Hodge gave an example of tiered flat pay at some dealers: $200 a car for one to five cars, $275 for six to ten and $300 for ten to fifteen.

Volume bonuses

Many plans pay more as your monthly unit count climbs, either as a cash bonus at certain tiers or as a higher commission percentage. This is why the last weekend of the month matters so much on a car lot.

Spiffs

Spiffs are small, targeted bonuses. Hodge wrote that they're often paid for things like selling aged inventory or hitting a unit count during a sales event, and that his former dealer paid $25 a customer for credit applications during the week.

Draws

A draw is an advance on commission you haven't earned yet. In Hodge's illustration, if the dealer pays you a $2,000 draw and you earn $3,000 in commission that month, your next check is $1,000.

Back-end products

Some plans also pay on the finance side of the deal, such as service contracts or other add-on products. Those products must be offered honestly and disclosed clearly. Never misstate whether an add-on is optional.

How much does a car salesman make in commission per car?

It depends entirely on the deal and the plan. Here's a simple illustration using made-up numbers, not industry averages, to show how the math works.

Example plan: 25% of front-end gross, with a $200 mini on low-gross deals.

  • Deal A: $2,400 front-end gross. 25% pays $600.
  • Deal B: $400 front-end gross. 25% would be $100, so the $200 mini applies.
  • A 10-car month: four deals like A and six like B pays $2,400 plus $1,200, or $3,600 in commission before any bonuses or spiffs.

Now change one thing. Hold more gross on three of those six thin deals and the month looks very different. Car sales commission rewards both volume and the quality of each deal, which is why two salespeople at the same store can earn wildly different amounts.

How much does a car salesman make in commission over a year, then? The BLS distribution above is the honest answer: a median of $44,680, with the top 10% above $87,570 in May 2025. Where you land depends on traffic, your close rate, your follow-up and your pay plan.

What does federal law say about car sales pay?

Commission pay comes with its own wage rules. The Labor Department's Fact Sheet #11 on automobile dealers (revised November 2018) explains several points that matter to salespeople:

  • Section 13(b)(10)(A) of the Fair Labor Standards Act exempts certain dealership sales, parts and mechanic personnel from federal overtime requirements.
  • For commission employees, a commission settlement period generally counts as the pay period.
  • Draws against commission within that period may be less than the minimum wage, with the draws credited toward the employer's minimum wage obligation when pay is settled.

State laws can add protections beyond federal rules. If something in your pay plan looks off, check with your state labor department.

How do you become a car salesman?

The barrier to entry is low. The Occupational Outlook Handbook says retail sales workers typically don't need formal education, most get on-the-job training lasting a few days to a few months, and salespeople in automotive sales get instruction on the types of vehicles for sale. Expect evenings and weekends.

The same BLS page notes that some states require a license for car salespersons, and requirements vary by state. California is one example. Its DMV vehicle salesperson license requires an application (form OL 16S), Live Scan fingerprinting with a background check, a $50 non-refundable application fee and a $1 family support program fee.

Here's how to become a car salesman, step by step:

  1. Check your state's rules. Look up whether your state licenses vehicle salespeople and what it requires.
  2. Pick the right store. Ask about traffic, the pay plan, training and how many salespeople have been there more than a year.
  3. Get the pay plan in writing. Use the questions in the table above.
  4. Learn the product cold. Customers often know specs before they walk in. You need to know more.
  5. Build your own book. Every customer is a future referral and a future trade-in.

How can a car salesperson earn more, the right way?

Income of car salesman veterans rarely comes from luck. It comes from habits most new reps skip.

Earn it honestly. In January 2025 the Fifth Circuit vacated the FTC's CARS Rule on procedural grounds before it took effect, but law firm Holland & Knight noted that dealers should still expect continued FTC scrutiny, including joint actions with state authorities. Be straight about price, payments, financing terms and add-ons. Your reputation is your pipeline.

Is car sales a good career?

Now you know how much car salesmen make and why the range is so wide. For people who can handle uneven paychecks and long weekends, it can be a strong career. Pay is tied directly to effort, the training is free, and the BLS data shows a real path upward into management. It's also one of the few jobs where you can provide more for your family next month by getting better this month.

Back on that Tampa lot, he takes the thin deal. He earns the mini, treats the couple like they bought the most expensive car on the lot and puts them in his follow-up list. Car ten counts toward the tier either way. Three months later their neighbor walks in and asks for him by name.

Frequently asked questions

Do car salesmen get a base salary?

Some do, but many dealership pay plans are mostly or entirely commission, often with a draw. Plans vary by dealer and state. Ask for the written pay plan and how a slow month is handled before you accept the job.

How many cars does a salesperson need to sell a month?

There is no universal number, because it depends on the store's traffic, the pay plan and your bonus tiers. Ask the sales manager what the average and top salespeople deliver each month at that store, and what unit counts trigger bonuses.

Do car salesmen make more on new or used cars?

It depends on the deal and the pay plan. Some plans pay different commission rates on new and used vehicles, and used cars can carry more gross on some deals. Ask how each is paid at your dealership.

What is a mini deal in car sales?

A mini is a flat minimum commission paid when a deal has little or no gross profit. It guarantees the salesperson something for the sale. The amount is set by the dealer's pay plan and sometimes rises with monthly volume.

Is selling cars a stressful job?

It can be. Income swings with traffic and closing, hours often include evenings and weekends, and month-end pressure is real. Salespeople who build a follow-up and referral system tend to have steadier months.

Do car salespeople get paid overtime?

Often not under federal law. The Labor Department's Fact Sheet #11 explains that section 13(b)(10)(A) of the FLSA exempts certain dealership sales personnel from overtime. State laws may differ, so check your state's rules.
